As a fee only financial planner, I am not interested in getting you to transact, so that I can make a commission. I am interested in helping you discover your goals, your investment preferences and then help build a portfolio that works for you.
The fee only financial planner charges you and only you, a fee to render services. He does not receive any commissions from any product manufacturer such as mutual funds, insurance, company deposits, etc.
The whole engagement is very structured and includes a signing of a service agreement, following Know Your Customer norms, understanding the risk profile, taking inputs on the current financial position and investments and using all these to build a comprehensive financial plan.
This financial plan becomes a basis to drive investment decisions and takes you away from random transactions to more thought through choices. Your money works for you, harder.
You don’t approach a financial planner to only seek information on mutual funds, stocks, etc. In fact, some of the financial planners may not even recommend any product to you.
The primary job of a financial planner is to help you structure your financial life. He goes beyond investment decisions to help you make decisions with regards to:
- Choosing debt or reducing debt
- Getting your protection right via insurance
- Buying a property now or later
- Understanding whether your current financial health and future cash flows can fund your goals
