“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?” – asked Alice.
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.
“I don’t much care where-” said Alice.
“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat.
The above conversation takes place between Alice and the Cheshire Cat in the very popular book, Alice in Wonderland written by Lewis Carroll.
Alice, in her dream, reaches this strange, mad place known as Wonderland. She goes through several experiences with the residents of this place. At one point, she reaches a fork junction and feels confused.
She cannot decide which of the 2 roads to take.
While she is struggling in her mind, she happens to see the Cheshire Cat (this cat speaks and can magically appear and disappear herself).
Alice asks her “which way“?
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.
In this brief conversation, comes out the most important life lesson for Alice and probably for you.
If you don’t know what you want to do or where you want to go, no advice on the path is ever going to be helpful.
Let’s take some other similar conversations you are likely to have played out in your own life – career or investing.
Which career should I choose?
Depends on what you want to do?
Where should I invest my money?
Depends on what you want to achieve with your money?
The purpose, the goal, the aim, the objective has a large role to play in how you take decisions about your life, career and money.
But right now, if you are in Alice’s situation and asking “which road to take” then it is time to think.
What is my purpose?
Where do I want to go?
Here is one of my favourite talks on this subject. If you haven’t already seen it, do it now “Finding your Why” by Simon Sinek.
What is your purpose, your goal? Why are you doing what you are doing? Do share your thoughts?
